In our constant quest to offer clients a destination that meets with their needs but offers something a little “different”, we would like to share our thoughts on The Baltic Region. This is the collective name given to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Each has its own unique persona; each boasts an abundance of open space, wonderful unspoilt architecture, great cuisine, fascinating history and culture; but all three will leave you lovestruck with the destination.
We admit to bias here – we love the Baltics. There is something magical about visiting a country which at times feels completely unharmed by modern life; to be able to walk along a street and not be blinded by the neon of fast-food restaurants is a rarity in modern Europe, and to consider a 15 minute journey through the city as something of a traffic jam is a pure dream to anyone in London, Paris, Frankfurt, Rome… That doesn’t mean that there is no fast food in Vilnius or Riga, but it’s not staring you in the face at every turn. It may go some way to explaining why Estonians and Latvians look so healthy, or why Lithuanians seem to have so much energy; or it may just be that there way of life feels so much more relaxed and stress-free, and that filters down to the everyday interactions that you experience in hotels and restaurants – service levels are extremely high and there is a truly genuine welcome.
Hotels are an interesting point too – the modern world is obsessed with faster and faster communication, and whilst you might feel that the Baltic region is likely to be way behind in terms of communication technology, the reverse is actually true. If you take a look at http://wifirank.com/ , a site that compares hotel wifi speeds around the world, then you will see that out of the top 10 hotel wifi speeds no fewer than 4 are in Riga and Vilnius. Not bad for two cities which are tiny in comparison to London, which also has 4 of the top 10. One of our clients recently admitted that the wifi speed in his Vilnius hotel was better than he had ever known, even in his office.
But what about the hotels in this region? You can find many major leading hotel brands, unique boutique hotels, and a third option – we have found more and more health and wellness hotels and venues than we ever would have imagined. It seems that health goes beyond normally everyday life; many of these venues have full-time doctors who will give a full assessment and will work with nutritionists and therapists to build a programme designed to suit your needs – whether you are looking to detox, or recover from illness or injury. Health spas abound, and we love them!
There is of course much more to write but space is limited. So let’s look at one perceived downside – access. It’s true that if you want to travel from London then you have a choice – budget airline or connecting flights. But wait… from the end of March, British Airways are flying directly to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. We hope that further flights to Vilnius and Riga will follow, but in the meantime you can always use Air Baltic, Ryanair, WizzAir…
Leaving the best for last, you are sure to be amazed at the value for money that you will find in The Baltics. Of course it helps to have great contacts, which is where we can help. Contact us here to see how we can help with your requirements.
